Does Your Child Have What It Takes To Succeed? Overview: Give children an answer and they succeed for the moment. Teach them to think and they succeed all their lives.
Our children are regularly faced with the problems of violence and drug abuse, as well as the challenge of performing well in school. Emotional intelligence prepares them to meet these challenges. Emotional intelligence refers to our ability to handle our emotions and social relationships, which allow us to succeed in our lives.
Through emotionally intelligent parenting, parents explore their own and their children’s emotions in creative ways. The children, in turn, are then prepared to make healthy, effective and emotionally intelligent decisions. This is an enjoyable, gratifying (journey/process) for the whole family. This program will address:
· Improving your child’s school performance · Reducing conflicts at home · Talking so your children will think · Teaching your children to make healthy choices
Who Should Attend? Parents, teachers, school administrators; counselors; psychologists; family therapists; social workers; clergy; youth workers; pediatricians; and childcare professionals. _____________________________________________________________________________ Social-Emotional Learning in Schools
Overview: In his groundbreaking book “Emotional Intelligence”, Daniel Goleman writes that social/emotional skills account for up to 80% of success in life. Emotional Intelligence describes our ability to motivate ourselves toward a positive goal, to understand and manage our own emotions and impulses, and to handle the emotions of others, building a positive relationship. These skills enhance the problem-solving and decision-making abilities of students, improve their relationship satisfaction, and maximize their potential in school and other relationships. This program will be designed to enhance the social and emotional literacy of all students. It is anticipated that school faculty and staff will also benefit. Social-emotional learning involves 5 basic competencies as described by Daniel Goleman in his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence.
· Identifying our emotions · Appropriately expressing our feelings · Motivating toward a positive goal · Recognizing and understanding the feelings of others · Developing positive relationships
The development of these skills will allow students to control their impulses, make healthy decisions, and create positive relationships. These abilities have been identified as primary determinants of success at work, at school, and at home.
Who Should Attend? Teachers, school administrators; counselors; psychologists; family therapists; social workers; clergy; youth workers; pediatricians; and childcare professionals. _____________________________________________________________________________ Violence, TV, Sex, and the Internet: A Guide to Responsible Parenting
Overview: Did you know that at a touch of a button, your child could access sexually oriented materials or hate group information without you every knowing? Through TV and the Internet, society’s problems can come directly into our homes. For the first time in our history, our children have unlimited access to uncensored, potentially dangerous information.
A parent’s job is to guide, nurture and protect their children. It is vital that all parents learn effective ways to help their children be safe in our “high tech” world. With that in mind, the Institute has created a dynamic workshop that focuses on practical ways to address these concerns. The title of the workshop is “Violence, TV, Sex and the Internet: A Guide to Responsible Parenting” and will be presented by renowned psychologist, Dr. Maurice Elias, author of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting with an introduction by Dr. Ed Dunkelblau, Director of the Institute for Emotionally Intelligent Learning.
The workshop will teach parents effective ways to talk with their children, monitor what information they are exposed to, and set clear appropriate expectations for TV and computer use. This workshop will also help parents to take advantage of the many opportunities that will arise with their children to foster emotionally intelligent growth and increase responsible decision-making behavior.
Who Should Attend? Parents and day care providers. ______________________________________________________________________________ Safe School Programming Overview: Children and adolescents should not be afraid to be in school. Unfortunately, a large proportion of our students experience fear or anxiety because of threats, challenges, and intimidation from other students. They also fear for their safety from aggressive or violent peers and adults...and often these students suffer these fears in silence. Much has been written addressing the need for safe schools. A major focus has been on external means such as installing metal detectors and video monitors, as well as increasing armed police presence. It is the focus of this conference to guarantee that school is a safe environment by building safeguards between and among students and faculty. This 2-day workshop is designed for educators and school mental health personnel to help them understand the nature of bullying and why it is vital to address this concern in schools. This topic is so important that the Illinois Legislature has approved of a law requiring every school to have an anti-bullying policy and a program of response (Public Act 92-0260).
At this hands-on program, participants will learn about effective policies and programs and, as part of the conference, will draft an anti-bullying policy for their respective schools. The program utilizes didactic presentation, small group workshops, and open-space meeting formats. (For those not familiar with open-space format, it is an innovative method for participants to get their unique needs met and to share perspectives and points-of-view.) Data collected from students at area schools will also be presented and utilized.
Who Should Attend? Teachers, school administrators; counselors; psychologists; family therapists; social workers; clergy; youth workers; pediatricians; and childcare professionals. ____________________________________________________________________________
